Movie Review: Les Miserables (2012)

Movie summary: The movie follows a prisoner (played by Hugh Jackman) on the run during the period of the French revolution. The prisoner is given a second chance in life by a priest and is able to make something of himself. But each time his identity is discovered, he is on the run again. On the way, his story is intertwined with the story of Fantine who is forced into prostitution in order to pay the people looking after her daughter. After her death, we find out that her daughter Cosette is actually mistreated by the inn keepers. Fast forward and Cosette is all grown up and falls in love with a man who is determined to have a part in the French revolution.

My thoughts: I had been looking forward to the movie ever since I saw the trailer last year. I have early memories of being part of the chorus for a local production. And quite often, I find that I am humming the music. The first 15 minutes of the movie were such a shock to me. I was getting squirmish in my seat, slightly embarrassed that I had recommended the movie to others. But I'm glad I stayed. It's a tear jerker. I cried my way through all the tissues I had.

I recommend only watching this film if you have an appreciation for history, musicals or sad stories. most of the actors were convincing in their roles. Because it is a film adaptation, there were limitations in the way the transitions happened.

All the main characters are miserable people- they are all broken in their own ways. They desperately try to get through their life situations. I hope you can find beauty in the broken. Even if it seems hopeless, if you have the redemption and salvation from God, then you truly have a future, EVEN IF YOU CAN'T SEE PAST THE MOMENT.

This week's free song from Klove . Beauty in the broken- Hyland

Looking at your pain an inch away
It's hard to see the plot
You wonder if your story's gonna change
You don't know you're
Too close to find the hope the light
Don't know just why, you are breaking
I know that you want to let go but…

Let me hold you through it
Let me carry you
I know if feels you're at the end
But here your story's just beginning
I know your tomorrow
I know where you are
Though you can't see past the moment
I see beauty in the broken
I see beauty in the broken

Looking at your life from where I am
I promise you that
All your dreams and all your greatest plans
They don't compare to
My hope for you my love can do
Way more than you can imagine
I know that you want to let go…

Let me hold you through it
Let me carry you
I know if feels you're at the end
But here your story's just beginning
I know your tomorrow
I know where you are
Though you can't see past the moment
I see beauty in the broken

So let the pieces of your heart fall into my arms
I wanna be your hope, so won't you let me
So let the pieces of your heart fall into my arms
I wanna be your hope, so won't you

Let me hold you through it
Let me carry you
I know if feels you're at the end
But here your story's just beginning
I know your tomorrow
I know where you are
Though you can't see past the moment
I see beauty in the broken
