We're full of hope

Happy Me day. Once a year we can celebrate the fact that we made it to the next year.

Thank you to all the friends and family (and strangers) who have taken time out of their busy schedules to show me that they care for me, this crazy erratic creature called Karen. Thanks to those who are supporting my efforts to raise money for Compassion International through my 10k run. And thanks to those that have made me happy just for being there on the sidelines, no matter how far away you are.

Everyday is indeed a blessing. So many prayers have been answered in the past year.
- A heart that yearns for You
- Opportunities for spiritual conversations
- Health and well-being for myself and my family
- My loving friends and family- for their support and care
- Many new friends, brothers and sisters in Christ
- Spiritual growth
- My brother's baptism this month
- Development of Sunday School worship and Senior 2 bonding
- Support from church
- Growth in Y4C and Chinese Youth Fellowship
- Movement and progress in my PhD
- Scholarship to the United States, arrangements with flights and accommodation
- And faith in the unseen, whether it be my future career, relationship and family.

In reviewing my prayer diary for the year, I can see things coming into place. I may not be able to see the end result yet, but surely the Lord is working. Sometimes I prayed for, and the answer has been far better than my original prayer. God knows what I need. It may not be necessarily what I want at the time, but he knows what is best for me. He has already given us his son, what can he withhold from us? Is anything too hard for our God?

And for the next year, my prayer requests
- The salvation and softening of hearts of my dear friends and family
- The ill and sick amongst family, friends and church members.
- Y4C, Chinese Youth, Sunday School Worship and Senior 2- spiritual growth and thirst
- Safety and productivity in America
- My family member's travels
- My brother's graduation
- PhD progress, completion and job search
- Continued faith in the unseen, including my future career, relationship and family

Movie review: The wishlist 2010

Movie review: The wishlist 2010

The summary:
Sarah has had a history of dating seemingly nice guys who turn out to be jerks/losers. She is frustrated so she starts a list of attributes she would like in her partner and rates her dates on these characteristics. She goes to get a coffee at her local coffee house only to realise that her regular barista has left and this new guy (Fred) refuses to serve her anything except for the coffee he recommends. She leaves in frustration only to bump into the good looking, animal-loving and kind pediatrician (Erik). As they get to know each other, she finds that Erik ticks all the boxes. Meanwhile, she has her daily battles with Fred and finally tries one of his coffees and admits that he is right. She bonds with both guys, with Erik romantically and with Fred as a very close best friend. Then Fred pops the question. Sarah had to make a decision as to who to pick and she makes a list of the attributes of both guys and agrees to marry Erik- but not before spending some wild nights with her mate Fred who is spontaneous, funny. Without ruining the story, that's the main gist.

My thoughts:
I can't believe other people don't like this story. I mean, ok, so the main characters aren't A list stars but they are convincing in their roles. The storyline is also convincing enough and there is a moral to the story: You might not know what you really want. Or What you really want isn't want you think you want. I am glad the main character made the right decision by Erik, poor thing. But she could have been more honest with him from the get-go: not that she had that insight though.

I know a few single girls and boys that have a list. Some maybe simple, others maybe more elaborate, but they have written down or thought about the ideal attributes of a future partner. Some are positive (they must have this or exhibit this quality) others are negative (they must not exhibit this or have this). Lists can help us make many decisions in life, but underlying relationships is more than just attributes, there is something that can't be measured. Chemistry. Of course it is wise to have some exclusions- which will prevent future problems.

Personal reflection:

Sometimes it's hard to let go of something that fits the list. But I agree, sometimes you don't realise what you need until you don't find contentment in what you thought you wanted.

GOD IS BIG Johnny Lee牧師:流行文化能讓世界知道神的大能

GOD CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS, PART THE WAVES.

This big God wants to come into your life!
What we think is impossible is possible with God.

A barren lady, past menopause was able to give birth to a child! Our God is so big.

God wants us to say WOW. God wants us to be amazed. He talks about his child who saw fireworks for the first time. WOW- do it again dad.

Doesn't matter if you believe it or not but God is a big God.

Biggest cause of death of young people in Korea is suicide. Why commit suicide, because there is no hope. But the gospel tells a different story. God doesn't want the church to be boring.

Are you ready to be part of the movement?

Stuck in the lab

Before I started my PhD I often heard of stories about how hard PhD students have to work. And for the last two years, it's been pretty cruisy. I had been waiting for approvals, waiting for software, programming. I had been doing literature reviews. But now it's game on.

I feel like I real scientist. I spend hours in my "lab" and put things in and wait for an output. Experiment fails and I have to do it again. Make a little mistake and I have to run the whole thing again. One set of analyses takes several hours- even on my speedy ramped up desktop. But so many so many failed attempts. Hours and hours on end refining lines of syntax. Looking for missed commas and fullstops, misspelt words and trying different types of analyses.

It's a very slow and arduous process. I wanted to give up. Imagine spending 15 hours straight on a set of analyses, then it goes wrong. You think you fix it then spend hours again.... and it still doesn't work. You try again and again. Nothing seems to work.

In these troubled times, I spend time with the Lord. While I wait, I meditate on his many blessings and listen to songs of praise. And He reminds me- NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE.

薜家燕's testimony

薜家燕 is an actress in Hong Kong. She talks about how she worked so hard to earned money. But then she because quite ill due to the stress on her body.
She prayed to God for recovery. God healed her and now she uses opportunities to spread God's word.

藝人見證 - 薜家燕

其實我不只一個人 Actually I'm not alone

This time of year makes me feel rather lonely. Particularly since mum is always overseas and I'm alone in a big house.

And my friend and I were talking about death (at our chocolate high tea) and what would we do if it was our last day on earth.
Surely, I am ready to go back to my heavenly father. My closest relatives have believed in God. My friends have all heard the complete gospel- they just haven't made the choice yet. I used to think that I would go to work even if I knew tomorrow was my last day on earth. Now, I think I would rather go and spread the good news to as many people as possible, to give away my wealth to the needy and to try to make a difference in the limited time I have left.
The challenge is to have the same mentality day in day out. For your don't know if it will be you last day.

How great is it that we have a promise of eternal life so that we do not fear death. We have something better waiting for us.

While still here on earth though, Thanks my dear friends for showing me that I am not alone. Thanks for your generous support of my running and charity.

離去了的笑容 沒法抹去 我很想你
[The smile that was left behind can't wipe away the fact that I miss you]
還翻看你日記 字跡裡 沒記載傷悲
[And looking at your diary, the words can't record sadness]
而我每天經過 家中的暗房
[and I pass the darkened room daily]
我以抑壓避開心碎
[I try to suppress the heartbreak]
明天世界是否遠去
[Can tomorrow be far away?]

我用流淚作禱詞 出口慢慢生了光線
[Using my tears as a prayer to slowly explain the light]
如像黑暗裡搏鬥 被驚嚇但有轉機
[Like struggling in the dark but you can change fear into an opportunity]
袮是神是我幫助 心酸的記憶
[You are God, my help, to get me through sour memories]
袮會包紮受傷的我 求可以撇掉這痛楚
[You will bandage the injured me, and I pray you can get rid of this pain]

朝望向天邊的盡頭 珍惜一呼一吸一句一字
[To look towards the horizon and to cherish each breath, each sentence and each word]
是因你叫我自由 不要愁容苦臉
[You called me to live with freedom, not to be sad anymore]
其實我可不只一個人
[Actually, I'm not alone]
身邊每個摯友來安慰
[I am surrounded by friends who comfort me]
而我會答應你 深淵裡可帶著歡笑
[And I will promise you that I will fill the the abyss with laughter]

我會去振作 而明天有袮愛我
[I will keep persisting because you will still love me tomorrow]
這舊事舊地總會經過 漫長夜裡
[These old things and old places will pass away, after a long night]
袮抱緊 袮抱緊 我雙臂
[You hold me you hold me hold my two arms]
來讓我欣賞這傳奇 今天終可走出悲痛之地
[Let me appreciate the wonders, today I can finally escape the world of grief]
樂觀看你我別離 心裡全然接受
[Optimistically looking at you leaving, accepting it with my whole heart]

其實我可不只一個人
[In fact, I can be more than one person]
擔當天使常存留心裡
[Often retained the heart to play an angel]
我會發出光采 可滿載笑聲
[I will radiate light which can be filled with laughter]
而我會答應你 今天 充滿著歡笑
[I will promise you that today is filled with laughter]

Question Evolution- Part 2

Question Evolution part 2 (For part 1)

ISSUE: DID DINOSAURS EXIST MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF YEARS BEFORE HUMANS?

ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE: NO.
1. Not millions and millions of years ago.
2. But Dinosaurs maybe mentioned in the bible.

1. Not millions and millions of years ago
http://creation.com/images/pdfs/cabook/chapter19.pdf
- There are problems with dating dinosaur bones to 65 millions years (to be discussed in a later blog entry)
- According to the bible land animals and man were created on day 6 of Creation.
- Sin brought death into the world, so nothing could have died before Adam sinned (therefore no bones, fossils).
- A global flood could have wiped out animals that were not on the ark, decedents of dinosaurs were on the ark
- How and why they are no longer among us isn't documented, but there are theories
 http://creation.com/the-extinction-of-the-dinosaurs

2. Dinosaurs maybe mentioned in the bible.

There are 3 names of animals we see in the bible that could have been dinosaurs (of course the word dinosaur wasn't invented at the time of the old testament).

http://clarifyingchristianity.com/dinos.shtml

“Dinosaur” Names, Then and Now
Name and date first written in the BibleScientific Name (best estimate) and date the name appeared
tanniyn (dragon)before 1400 BCdinosaur1841 AD
behemothbefore 1400 BCbrachiosaurus1903 AD
Leviathanbefore 1400 BCkronosaurus1901 AD

Behemoth has the following attributes according to Job 40:15-24
  • It “eats grass like an ox.”
  • It “moves his tail like a cedar.” (In Hebrew, this literally reads, “he lets hang his tail like a cedar.”)
  • Its “bones are like beams of bronze,
His ribs like bars of iron.”
  • “He is the first of the ways of God.”
  • “He lies under the lotus trees,
In a covert of reeds and marsh.”
Leviathan has the following attributes according to Job chapter 41, Psalm 104:25,26 and Isaiah 27:1. This is only a partial listing—just enough to make the point.
  • “No one is so fierce that he would dare stir him up.”
  • “Who can open the doors of his face, with his terrible teeth all around?”
  • “His rows of scales are his pride, shut up tightly as with a seal; one is so near another that no air can come between them; they are joined one to another, they stick together and cannot be parted.”
  • “His sneezings flash forth light, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lights; sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke goes out of his nostrils, as from a boiling pot and burning rushes. His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.”
  • “Though the sword reaches him, it cannot avail; nor does spear, dart, or javelin. He regards iron as straw, and bronze as rotten wood. The arrow cannot make him flee; slingstones become like stubble to him. Darts are regarded as straw; he laughs at the threat of javelins.”
  • “On earth there is nothing like him, which is made without fear.”
  • Leviathan “played” in the “great and wide sea” (a paraphrase of Psalm 104 verses 25 and 26—get the exact sense by reading them yourself).
  • Leviathan is a “reptile [a] that is in the sea.” (Isaiah 27:1)
MY THOUGHTS
- the bible is not just a spiritual book. It's also a history book.
- Christians don't have to be afraid of claims that dinosaurs existed.
- We can question whether evidence of fossils being million or even billions of years old is accurate.
- We can find out more so that we can always be ready to explain the faith we have.
