I do!? I don't!

Breakfast tv had a huge debate about same sex marriages. Indeed, if you are not a christian, I cannot see why you would not support this. On the surface, support same sex marriage seems like support equal rights. It's only fair that they have the same rights as heterosexual couples right? Doesn't God love gay people too? Don't children of gay parents deserve love too? What about gay kids?

If gay marriage is so wrong why do some churches around the world support gay marriage? Aren't some churches just being old fashioned? Women have gotten rights, slaves have been freed, why not homosexual rights?

If some christians argue that marriage between men and women in the bible is old fashioned and should be outdated- then what next? Can we compromise on other big issues such as murder? sin? baptism?

THIS IS NOT A SIMPLE MATTER. We should investigate for ourselves what the bible says about this matter instead of relying on highly sensationalized media reports.

Summary:
- Man + wife = Life. This was the natural order in which God created, and this union can produce life.
- Even Jesus (over 5000 years after creation) reaffirmed that from the beginning God created male and female.
- explicitly points out that sex/lust with the same sex is shameful and sinful.

Homosexuality is a CHOICE. Let us not confuse this with gender identity disorder in which people are born feeling they are not the gender they look like. People all have CHOICES as to who they want as a partner. You can make an educated choice to choose a same sexed partner if you so wish, but that is your CHOICE. We make choices all the time, and when we make bad choices, we need to consider the consequences.

God designed marriage to be between male and female. (Genesis 2:18-25)
And the intimate union between the two can produce offspring.

In the days of the bible, homosexuals were considered sinners, their behaviour- shameful and God wiped these people out on several occasions. Although not entirely central to the argument, homosexuality is related to an increased risk for sexually transmitted disease and other problems such as increased risk for suicide in homosexual males.

Children also learn a lot from observing. If we allow for homosexual marriage then it is teaching our children that this is ok, fair, just, right. They should make their own choices and be well informed by their parents about what is right in God's eyes. Don't take my point of view as the be all and end all. I encourage you all to make an educated decision as to whether you support gay marriage.

I can bravely say that I have friends who are homosexual. I love them. I believe they have a right to civil unions in which they publically commit themselves to each other and share in legal rights as to other people who choose to cohabit or marry. I believe that marriage is between a man and wife. It is a sacred union. I believe that this is the way God designed it to be.

But at the end of the day. God loves us. He loves us even when we make choices that hurt him. If we are willing to repent, he is willing to welcome you back into his loving arms.

My pledge

Earlier this week I received a hand delivered wedding invitation. We felt so blessed to be considered so important that a family would trek across town to deliver an envelope. In fact this family supports this wedding so much that they have collectively put their heart and soul into the organisation process.

I have fond memories of the hospitality offered by this family as I was growing up. I remember playing, eating and more playing freely at their house, even when we moved away we would still have large dinners together occasionally.

Unfortunately, I will be overseas for a work trip during the wedding festivities. Wish I can go, for I know it will also be a massive reunion with all my friends growing up.

Marriage is a big step. It's when man and woman leave their families to start their own individual family unit. After the wedding festivities, the couple have to adjust to a new lifestyle where they are no longer just individuals, but a couple. 2 are now 1. Even if a couple have been together for a long time, there are still many things that change when you enter into this long term- life long contract. I was recently watching rooftop prince and the female character proposes to a guy she knows will not be in the world for much longer. And she says, do you think people get married expecting that they will be together for the next 700 years? People get married thinking that they will be together at least for this lifetime. In heaven there is no marriage anymore. We will be entirely different.

There is an eternal union though. One that lasts forever. It's our marriage/union with Jesus. We are the bride, he is the groom. In the words of the close scenes of rooftop prince, where have you been? I have been waiting for so long. Jesus will be waiting for us for us to say I do, I am willing to follow you all the days of my life and willing to follow you into the unknown for eternity.

For the lovely couple, I send my sincere congrats and may God reach out into their hearts so that 2 can become 3 with Christ at the center of their relationship.

Movie Review: Zookeeper (2011)

Movie review: Zookeeper (2011)

Movie summary: Griffith plans an elaborate marriage proposal only to be turned down by his girlfriend because he is a zookeeper and doesn't want to improve his lifestyle. Flash forward 5 years, Griffith is still happily employed at the zoo and the animals love him. Griffin's brother is a high roller and he is about to get married, he holds a party at the zoo and Griffith's ex is there. He becomes incredibly nervous around her and the animals overhere hints that she is still into him. In a series of paranormal events, it's revealed that the animals can actually talk and they show their appreciation for the care Griffith has for them by helping him get the girl. He gets the girl, but at the expense of losing his identity. When he finally realises this, he makes a made rush to find the one who truly loved him for who he was.

My thoughts: I've been meaning to watch it for a while. It's a really good laugh and has good morals. If you don't expect excellent cinematography then you are fine. There are gross exaggerations and unnecessary jokes as critical in fitting with this genre of film.

Many times in relationships, we may try to applease someone else and become someone we are not. Or we may exaggerate the bits of us that we think the partner desires. The key to success of long term relationships is perhaps the balance of being true to yourself and making accommodations and changes to yourself in order to make it work. In the movie, Griffith loses his identity but he gains confidence. Isn't it a beautiful thing when someone can love you despite your faults? That's one of the criteria for my future partner- that he can see past my faults, but at the same time encourage me to be the best version of me that God intended me to be.

I sometimes stop and think. How amazing is it that God loved us while we were sinners, imperfect humans. And he chose to die for us on the cross just so that we can enjoy eternity with him. Everyone lives forever. But there are two destinations. One is heaven the other is hell. Which would you choose?

Research digest: talking to yourself

Over the last week, I broke up with my network provided. For those who know me, I have a slight fear of commitment and to last 2 years with vodafone/3 was a tremendous task. I was finally able to port to a different network and it's been amazing. Clear communication is so important.

Research digest: Speaking to yourself may help you find things when you lose them.

My thoughts: Yes, I often talk to objects or call to my phone/keys/bag expecting the universe to deliver it to my feet when I call. But it shows that it helps to search for something.

You know what, the bible says that we should call to God. And he will respond. Sometimes, prayer can take a while to happen or we may not hear an answer for a while and it will seem like we are talking to our ceiling. But if we keep calling to God, he will answer!

It Doesn’t Mean You’re Crazy – Talking to Yourself Has Cognitive Benefits, Study Finds
(good news for quite a few of us...)

Most people talk to themselves at least every few days, and many report talking to themselves on an hourly basis.
What purpose is served by this seemingly irrational behaviour? Previous research has suggested that such self-directed speech in children can help guide their behavior. For example, children often talk themselves step-by-step through tying their shoelaces, as if reminding themselves to focus on the job in hand.
"One advantage of talking to yourself is that you know at least somebody's listening." Franklin P. Jones once said.

Can talking to oneself also help adults?

In a recent study published inQuarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, psychologists Gary Lupyan (University of Wisconsin-Madison) and Daniel Swingley (University of Pennsylvania) conducted a series of experiments to discover whether talking to oneself can help when searching for particular objects. The studies were inspired by observations that people often audibly mutter to themselves when trying to find, for example, a jar of Peanut Butter on a supermarket shelf, or the stick of butter in their fridge.
In the first experiment, participants were shown 20 pictures of various objects and asked to find a particular one. In some trials, participants saw a text label telling them what object they should find ("Please search for the teapot.") In other trials, the same subjects were asked to search again while actually say the word to themselves. It was found that speaking to themselves helped people find the objects more quickly.

In a follow-up experiment, participants performed a virtual shopping task in which they saw photographs of items commonly found on supermarket shelves and were asked to find, as quickly as possible, all the instances of a particular item. For example, participants would be asked to find all the bags of apples, or all the bottles of Diet Coke. Here, too, there was an advantage to speaking the name of the object when participants were looking for very familiar products. For example, saying "Coke" when looking for Coke helped whereas saying "Speed Stick" when looking for Speed Stick Deodorant actually slowed people down.

The next time you lose your keys, you may want to mutter "keys keys keys" to yourself while searching for them, and just ignore the strange looks you may be getting…

Research digest: Brain and substance use in teens

Research digest:

Summary: Some teens are wired to be vulnerable to substance experimentation and impulsiveness.

My thoughts: For some time now, there has been growing research into why almost 80% of young people experiment with alcohol and other substances and why some develop patterns of regular use and others patterns of abuse and dependence. We point to the role outside of the individual: families, peers, schools, communities, cultural norms. And within the individual. But hardwiring of the brain seems to point to an inevitability. It does not. Even in identical twins, when one becomes dependent on a substance, the other is not always dependent. It is obvious that there are a number of factors at play. The next stage of research is to discover, how to protect individuals with vulnerabilities!

NARSAD Grantee Discovers Link Between Substance Abuse and Brain 'Wiring' in Teens

Mark Bellgrove, PH.D. attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) expert
The largest imaging study of the human brain ever conducted is helping researchers understand why some teenagers start smoking or experimenting with drugs and others don’t. NARSAD grantee Mark Bellgrove, Ph.D. Associate Professor, School of Psychology at University of Queensland in Australia, was part of an international team of researchers that discovered a number of previously unknown networks in the brain that provide strong evidence that some teenagers are at higher risk for drug and alcohol experimentation than others because their brains are wired to make them more impulsive. The findings, published online in Nature Neuroscience on April 29, were based on studies of 1,896 14-year-olds whose brains were scanned using functional MRI imaging (fMRI). The scans revealed that diminished activity in a network involving the orbitofrontal cortex in the brain is associated with experimentation with alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs in early adolescence.
Using a complex mathematical approach called factor analysis the researchers were able to identify seven networks involved when impulses were successfully inhibited and six networks involved when inhibition failed—from the vast and chaotic actions of a teenage brain at work. They were also able to show that other newly discovered networks are connected with the symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. These ADHD networks are distinct from those associated with early drug use. Edythe London, Professor of Addiction Studies and Director of the UCLA Laboratory of Molecular Pharmacology, who was not part of the new study, described it as "outstanding," noting that it "substantially advances our understanding of the neural circuitry that governs inhibitory control in the adolescent brain."

Movie Review: Social network (2010)

Movie Review: Social Network (2010)

Movie Summary: Mark is a genius with a lack of social skills. He wants the whole package, success, the girl, friends and the life. His girlfriend dumps him leaving him drunk and angry where he blogs about her and writes the code for a website that compares the looks of college undergraduates. This becomes an overnight sensation before he gets caught for hacking into different college sites. He is then approached by two brothers who want him to help with me the creation of a social network for Harvard only students. He agrees but then starts to create the Facebook with the financial support of his best friend. He then gets tangled in a lawsuit regarding intellectual property and has a fall out with his best friend when he unintentionally starts to exclude him in business decisions and company ownership.

My thoughts: The movie was interesting, the constant non-linear retell of aspects of the story and jargon kept my mind active. If you are interested in a dramatized version of how Facebook started, this is an interesting watch indeed. I guessed I hoped Mark would find a girl at the end of the story, but it was never made to be love story and it's meant to be about how it all started- a breakup. I think friends are so important. For me, I can't see that I would ever intentionally step on any friends in order to achieve success. It's easy to be misled by others to go on a path that is not true to your own.

I read in the bible today in John 15 that Jesus calls us his Friends. He has chosen us, requested to be our friend. We just have to accept this invitation. He can be your close friend and have access to all your posts, events, photos or he can be an acquaintance and only see your profile pic. When you choose to have a deeper relationship with Jesus, not only do you give him access to more of you, but you also get more access to who HE is!

John 15

New International Version (NIV)

The Vine and the Branches

15 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit —fruit that will last—and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is my command: Love each other.

Movie review: Footloose (2011)

Movie Review: Footloose (2011)

Movie summary: Our main character Ren moves from the big city after his mother dies of cancer. He is shocked to find the rules of the rural town to be quite strict. He finds out that rules against going out at night, loud music, dancing, drinking, etc were because some seniors died in a car accident several years ago. One of the boys killed in the accident was the pastors son, and now, the pastor's only surviving daughter is acting out in rebellion. Our main character becomes attracted to her but finds that she is wasting her life away because she is hurt and angry.
Ren then lobbies against the town council in an effort to restore dancing in the town, particularly the dance for graduating students. He looses this battle with the town but then they hold the dance slightly out of the town.

My thoughts: I haven't seen the original so I can't comment on whether it's better or worse. The movie held my attention, I was excited, shocked, I cried, I laughed. What a good night out should always contain. I wouldn't recommend this movie for children there are highly sexualized images on screen and themes that aren't appropriate for kids, even with parental guidance. Throughout the film are many spiritual references. Ren reads that even in the bible people used music to sing and rejoice. There are themes of sin, repentance and new life.

Sometimes young people can disappoint society. Sometimes young people can make mistakes. But I say, don't write us off just yet. We can bring about change when we put our minds to it. And God, he is always ready to welcome us back into his arms, no matter how much physical or emotional damage has been done.
