30 before 30 second draft

Earlier this year I wrote a post about 30 things I would like to accomplish before I am 30.

Time is ticking ticking.
Here is my refined list and with some timelines.
1. Finish my PhD (estimated Graduation date June 2013), working hard each and everyday towards this goal!
2. Learn the guitar. Currently taking lessons, it would be so good if I am able to accompany Sunday School and other worship sessions with the guitar!
3. Finish a half marathon. Currently training for a half marathon in October in Canada!
4. Travel to Europe. The plan is to do the trip after PhD submission.
5. Go to Disneyland. Plan to visit in July!!
6. Buy a house/apartment. Started to look around.
7. Get down to goal weight. With the help of cross training (pilates, swimming, running), I think I might get down to the goal weight by the end of the year.
8. Take more care in appearance and style. To date, I have got rid of 3 large bags of clothes. Still need to throw some more away before shopping in the states!
9. Learn to parallel park in the street. I have had some success in this area but practice makes perfect.
10. Start a family. Well I have done nothing towards this goal and not sure when and whether it will actually happen. But I am much more content with the way I am at the moment. I am waiting for the right type of guy to find me. He's probably got lost along the way, but no worries, we'll find each other one day.
11...30. As for the other goals... I haven't really done anything about and have no definite plans (Take good photos with a DSLR, climb a mountain, improve cooking skills, sponsor a child, get a real job, live abroad, do something dangerous, visit harbin ice sculptures, see Northern lights, attend a live christian concert, help with microfinancing, swim with dolphins, watch a meteor shower, save someone's life, watch my best friends get baptised, mission trip overseas).

But of course we have plans to do this and that, but at the end of the day it depends on God's plan.

Psalms 37: 3-4 Trust in the LORD and do good;
dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.

There seems to be a lot that I have to learn in the next few years. Our God is greater. And His plans for us maybe greater than what we can imagine. So we just have to work hard in whatever situation we are in, and be prepared.

Nearly died today

No joke. I nearly died today but God kept me safe.

I usually wear my headphones while walking into my office. Today, for some reason, I had taken them off before I boarded the bus. As I was approaching my office, I heard a rustling sound, I looked up and a giant tree branch fell at my feet. MISSED ME BY XXX MUCH. Drop bears are quite common in Australia. This was a pretty close call, the branch was longer than my torso. Without even being shaken, I moved to shove the branch out of the path and bystanders helped me move this large branch.

I have traded my life- all of it to God. I have surrendered my all, and in return, God has given me a life I am not worthy of. Safety and peace that I could never imagine. And I will continue to trust in Jesus as my Lord and saviour - even if my future appears to be uncertain, even if I cannot see when I will finish my PhD, where I would work after graduation, whether I will actually meet my future partner soon, whether I will have a family of my own. All this, I have surrendered and let go of. For God continues to show me each and everyday that he is faithful.

Actually, we are faced with these near death experiences all too often. I have the assurance of eternal life- BUT DO YOU? What would happen to you if you died today?

by your side

There are days where you feel like you are drowning in life's stresses; whether it be school work, work pressures, relationships issues, difficulties with family members, finances. Things that you cannot solve.

Today was not one of those days. I know there are many things waiting for me to do today, but I know I am not facing any of these alone. The Lord almighty is walking beside me and providing me with strength and wisdom to face these challenges.

I will overcome!

在你身邊 詞曲:蘇郁修
Su Yu [by your side] lyrics:
抬起頭 看著天 我知道你就在那一邊
[Looked up I know that you are over there]
放開心 閉上眼 你愛慢慢在我胸前
[Release your heart,  close your eyes,  Your love is slowly felt in my chest]
總相信 能看見 你榮耀在我生命彰顯
[Always believe that I am able to see your glory revealed in my life]
求你來 引領我 從現在一直到永遠
[I Ask you to guide me from now until forever]
我只想要你在我身邊 在風雨中賜我勇氣能走向前
[I just want you by my side in the rain, give me courage to go on]
不論還會有什麼考驗 有你就有滿足完全
[No matter what test arises, through you I will be able to meet these fully]
我只想要陪在你身邊 在你愛裡滿有能力滿有安慰
[I just want to stay by your side, in your love I am filled with ability and comfort]
不論什麼事都不改變 用一生跟隨心甘情願
[No matter what I will not change, I will use this life to willingly follow you]

Everyone starts somewhere

Just gotta start somewhere.

response: 12.5 writing rules. http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/writing-rules/

But here are the rules and my comments

1. If you write every day, you get better at writing every day.
In the first year of my PhD I attended a talk that suggested we can finish our PhD on time if we just wrote 200 words a day. Well, three years in and I haven't kept that goal. But But But. It's not as easy as it sounds. One of my papers went through 26 revisions, full revisions. I kept re-writing the 5000 words... again and again.
2. If it’s boring to you, it’s boring to your reader
Academic writing doesn't have to be boring. Cumbersome writing is time consuming for the writer and reader. Make a point and make it clear.
3. Get a writing routine and stick with it
We were taught to use 2 golden hours. Basically, if we are productive for 2 hours a day then the rest of the time we can spend checking facebook, running errands. My routine is that I wake up, do my morning devotion, exercise, breakfast then start writing. After this writing time I can check email, etc.
4. Poetry does NOT have to rhyme. Poetry does not NOT have to rhyme.
Not that relevant here. Because academic writing does have to be punchy. Get to the point.
5. Resist stereotypes, in real life and in your writing.
Step outside. I remember getting a really good mark in undergrad because I applied knowledge from a completely different field to the essay content. If you are a psychologist, don't just associate with psychologists, get to know other people and their fields of work. You never know when you are going to be inspired.
6. Writers read. Writers read a lot. Writers read all the time.
Very true. Read read read. Whether it be academic articles, textbooks, clinical journals. These people got published, they must be doing something right!
7. Make lists of your favorite words and books and places and things.
I have ideas journals. Keep it handy.
8. There doesn’t always have to be a moral to the story.
OR academic talk, the data doesn't have to be significant. Something I have learned is that p<.05 is not the be all and end all. I got a first class honours writing about results that aren't significant. I got my first first-authored publication with results that aren't significant.
9. Always bring your notebook. Always bring a spare pen.
Take notes all the time. Of everything.
10. Go for walks. Dance. Pull weeds. Do the dishes. Write about it.
Well, probably not. But do have a life. If you are stuck in the office all day, I doubt you are productive for most of it. Get some exercise, let your mind relax once in a while. I get my best ideas on runs, in the showers... not at the same time of course.
11. Don’t settle on just one style. Try something new!
Keep experimenting.
12. Learn to tell both sides of the story
Dont' just critique past research!
12 ½. Stop looking at this poster. Write something!
