Movie summary: Oz is a magician who travels with the circus earning loose change and getting by. He is known to be popular with the ladies but his heart belongs to one particular lady. Unfortunately, he has decided that he has greater and better aspirations for his life. He mistreats women luring them with false promises. And he even mistreats his assistant treating him as a tool rather than a person. As luck would have it, he is on the run from people who hold a grudge against him and is swept away in a tornado in a hot air balloon into Oz. And here, others claim that he is the wizard of oz, with a prophecy that involves being the people's salvation from the wicked witch. Oz learns to be responsible and to care for those around him while becoming the wizard others expect him to be.

My thoughts: I had been looking forward to Oz for a while now. I was left disappointed. The original tale was fantastic, imaginative. The Broadway spin off was creative, sensational. This, was a good Saturday afternoon tv movie. In keep true to the colours and themes of the original movie, disney have left viewers wanting more- the technology is there to make a spectacle, the same spectacle I saw in Alice in wonderland. Yet there were no real surprises to the film, the execution or the ending. Although there is no killing per se in the film, it still requires parental guidance as a few of the scenes are a little scary to the little ones. Most of the actors/characters in the film had no real dimension, depth.

But the film got me thinking about Theodora. I really felt for her character. She is betrayed by both her sister and her lover. And poisoned by hatred, she becomes even more evil than the former. She becomes an mean evil green killing machine. Anger in itself is not a sin, it's one of our core emotions. But the bible explicitly reminds us to not sin in anger, to be slow in anger, etc. When we act in anger, we might as well be the ugly wicked witch, for we are no ambassador for the kingdom of heaven.

Do you hold a grudge against someone? Don't let the son go down while you are still angry, make amends.

Ephesians 4:26-28

New International Version (NIV)
26 “In your anger do not sin”[a]: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27 and do not give the devil a foothold. 28 Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

以 弗 所 書 4:26-28
