The year that was

23:24:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

2011 has passed by ever so quickly. It's hard to summarize my experiences in a single entry. I've laughed and cried, loved and lost. I've finished my coursework for my masters. Got married to my Phd. Been to Sydney, HK, China, Thailand, Tasmania.

I've learned a lot. Grown spiritually.

When I look back at the year that has been, it's tough to pin point all the negatives. I know I have had my struggles. But the blessings seem to shine ever so brightly. And let us count our blessings. Firstly, my grandpa was blessed with the promise of eternal life before he passed away. I have been blessed with new friends this year. I have been blessed with a close english and chinese youth group. I have been blessed with opportunities to look after myself and others. I have been blessed with opportunities to spread the gospel. I have been blessed with opportunities to use my clinical skills in the community. I have been blessed by milestones- last clinical class, passing my confirmation milestone, celebrating a quarter century. I have been blessed with safety- surviving a car accident that totalled my car. I have been blessed with opportunities to travel because of my work and experiencing different micro cultures. I was blessed with opportunities for personal growth. God has also taught me a lot about romantic relationships, mood disorders, dementia and the role of clinical health psychology from textbooks, lectures, clinical practice and personal experience. I have been blessed to have friends that have stuck with me through thick and thin. And the smiles of strangers, green grass, an unchanging sun above the clouds. Endless things to list but limited time to recap.

God has been compassionate to me and has changed me this year. I am no longer addicted to k-t- or hk drama. I have broken free from the addiction to computer games. I have been able to slowly let go of things in my past. I am slowly learning to be more patient, loving and compassionate. I am slowly learning to look after myself. I learned to be submissive. Although not all of these changes were easy to make or comfortable to make but I look forward to changes that he makes in me each day.

Every person I meet, every experience that I have, I know is preparing me for a future only He can see. God knows what he is doing and I will relax knowing that he is in control.

Thank you for your support and love my family and friends, and thank you God for everything in 2011.

Family gatherings

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Family gatherings at my household are pretty spectacular. From outside the apartment, people may think there must be a huge rowdy crowd inside sharing in all types of cheer. Instead, inside is a very intimate gathering where family members are only right if they are the loudest. People stop around and make fun of each other and politics. I'm probably a little mouse in comparison to the verbose team. I sit and observe, occassionally volunteer an answer about my phd, no I havent finished, yes, perhaps i should get married instead, then people leave me to my own devices as I try to keep up with the changing topics- ranging from how to cook food, to politics, to movie stars to work issues and exchange rates. Even on the coldest of nights in winter, when my family is around, it becomes warm and inviting- unless you are overwhelmed. Its hard to imagine a silent night at my house when the whole family is around. I often say, it's not the food we eat, but the company we keep AND the greatest present is your presence.

Yet, we often related Jesus' birth to a silent night where all was calm and there were little people around- just a manger filled with animals. Silence, although peaceful can often be associated with loneliness or despair whereas volume screams of a celebration.

But in the silence, we can often reflect more. We can consider the magnitude of His love for us by choosing freewillingly to come down to earth, to bear our sins on the cross and to rise again. Thank you Lord Jesus, for the greatest gift of love, this christmas, and everyday.

another step clearer

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Admist my recovery, I was checking emails. And when I was in the depths of despair God gave me hope in a future only he could see. I got an offer. Something I was praying for, I didnt know Gods will but he has opened a road and I will at least take a step forward.

I have been skeptical about dreams but even in the days of the bible dreams from God provided people with direction. Mum had a dream a while ago that I would meet someone important in my life over there. And I had a dream hearing that someone was calling my name, in a voice that I am not familiar with. Whereever you lead me lord, I will follow. Send me. Send that person, and I will love them. Send those people and I will care for them. Use me as your tool for peace, love and hope.

an experience an a half

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

There have been several occassions in my life where I had been truly grateful for survival. Yesterday was one of those.

We boarded an extremely small boat to view hk geological park to battle the waves of HK. no, you dont need life jackets, no the beeping sound is of no concern. Seriously? If I wasnt afraid then, imagine my terror, when the boat stopped moving in open water. I was sitting at the back of the boat with nothing stopping me from falling into the freezing cold waters but my arms clinging onto the boat with dear life.

My brother thinks I'm still recovering from shock. Well, I've never been so embarassed in my life to puke in the middle of a shopping trip. For the last 24 hours I have gotten to know the bathroom and bed quite well. But thanks be to God that I survived and that my recovery has been so quick.

Its these experiences that remind me that life is short, we have to be grateful for each living moment. And health is something we cannot take for granted.

Christmas song #22

A long journey

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

My trip from home A to home B is a 30 hour journey. Car to the train station, plane to BKK, transit for many hours, BKK to the airport. Airport via train to central. Central to my home via taxi. AND this is with the aid of modern technology. The first things I always like to do when I get home? Let people know that my journey was safe, eat some good food, have a good shower and a good sleep.

In the days of the bible their transport options were by far more limited. Walking, using animals. And the journeys would be long and dirty. They would be walking in open sandals and when it rained, well it rained. So when Joseph took his heavily pregnant wife to his home town... it was a long journey. And after such a long journey, they found out there was no room for them! But God had prepared a place for them, in his own will.  Mary delivered her child in the presence of animals, in a manger shielded from the elements.

Even after long journeys and we can't see a happy ending (that we were imagining), remember that God still prepares in His own way.

Luke 2

The Birth of Jesus
1 In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2(This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Falling into place

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

We can only see so far, it's as if we weren't given all the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle before we began to construct it. So it was impossible for us to see how the picture would turn out. We might wage a guess at what the picture would look like but we are often wrong, well I am often wrong at least.

I thought the ending would turn out differently with the limited information that I was given. Instead, we can pray that God gives us more pieces of the puzzle, so we can see more clearly what will take place in the future. I have been reading about the prophets of the bible who saw things that would happen within the day, within the year or even at the end of the times. They saw these things, not because they are brilliant, because they were close to God and God revealed for them a future only He could see.

Let us strengthen our relationship with God so that we can see his plans for us, plans in our health, in our relationships, in our studies, our careers, and our spiritual growth/service.

Christmas song #20

A sense of release

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Have you ever experienced a sense of complete peace about a decision? Or complete release from burdens?

Jesus promised that he will carry our burdens. Yet some of us choose to carry the load ourselves. We choose to worry about this or that.

Let go, let God and he would truly give you release!

Matthew 11:28. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Rejected gifts

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Sometimes when you give gifts with the best intentions, the gifts may not be received with the best intentions. Does this discourage us from giving? Gift giving is one of my love languages. It's a way I show my love for my family and friends. It hurts though when you present someone with a nicely wrapped gift and they hand it straight back, thanks but no thanks.

No hard feelings. I guess it was a little sad that this particular gift was "true love". So how does God feel when we reject His gift? He came to show us what love is, he died for our sins on the cross and offered us eternal life. All we have to do is to accept this gift, no terms and conditions, no fine print. All we have to do is to accept this gift of grace: believe that we are sinners, know that he died for our sins and trust in him as our Lord and Saviour in exchange for external life.

It really is that simple.

Christmas song #17

Full stops

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Such is the nature of my work: An inappropriately placed full stop can cause a world of pain. From my crazy typist training in high school, I have learned how to touch type upwards of 80wpm, but accuracy has never been my strong point. My right hand often types faster than my left hand and as a result, I often have mistakes. But even before I finish the word, I know I have made the mistake and would be able to correct easily without looking at the screen.

Words are much easier to work with than syntax. Syntax is much more delicate and much less forgiving than an essay or other composition on microsoft word. An incorrectly placed full stop can cause the output to throw a fit. I can spend hours trying to find my mistakes in my syntax and on one occasion, I found that I had put a fullstop in the middle of a syntax sentence. The line of code was screaming out to me ~ why did you want to end the code here, it's not appropriate! And so with a bit of frustration, I deleted the fullstop and the analyses ran perfectly. Without a glitch.

I often like to reflect on life's little happenings and apply these lessons in other aspects of my life. My gut instinct is to put a fullstop in place. I like to analyse a situation and if I can see how it wouldn't work, I would stop. Of course this is after prayer, and my prayers always talk about closed doors.

Sometimes fullstop aren't a big deal, other times they may influence you in the long term of the lives of others.

God is so forgiving. He doesn't stop and give up on us when we disappoint him. He doesn't stop and give up on us when we take a wrong turn. He doesn't stop and give up on us when we wander further and further away from him. Instead, he waits until we realise that he's been calling out to us all along. God is the author of life, and to me, he seems to use more commas than fullstops.

And so, let's not rush into putting fullstops whenever we are faced with challenges, let us insert a comma, pause and wait for God to show us the next phrase.

Isaiah 30:18

New International Version (NIV)
 18 Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you;
therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.
For the LORD is a God of justice.
Blessed are all who wait for him!

Christmas song #16

Baby worship

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

As part of "evolution" we were designed for baby worship. I guess worship is a really strong word, but whenever we see babies we oo and ah, and naturally want to nurture and protect the baby. Crowds would form around babies and observe everything they do.

If not for this, the defenceless being would be in dire danger! They can't protect themselves or even verbalise their distress. But babies do cry! And their mothers can tell, mostly or guess, what their needs are from the cries.

When there is a newborn, people go visit the mother in hospital, they look at baby photos and ask all types of questions.

Some 2000 years ago, another baby was born. His name was Jesus and shepherds/wise men came to visit this child. They truly worshipped him because he is the King of Kings and not just because he was a cute little baby.

Today, we can still worship Jesus, the Prince of Peace as we do a baby or infant. We can find out more about him, we can ooh and ahh at his every move, we can talk to him in our own way and we can sing him happy birthday or other songs of praise!

Isaiah 9

6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
   Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
   Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the greatness of his government and peace
   there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
   and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
   with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
   will accomplish this.

Graduations

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

To me, academic achievement was always more important that social events. While others were dreaming of being prince and princesses, playing around with make up and dresses, I was reading, asking questions and dreaming of a day when I would be successful.

For me, graduations are a big deal. It is a celebration of achievement, a milestone. I am a veteran of the graduation ceremony, attending my own and celebrating with friends. Graduating with friends is such a blessing, you go through the hard times together and then you celebrate together.

And academic graduations usually mark the start of a career.  Many will have received job offers before graduation and have little worries. For others, graduations may mean an end to an academic career and an opening to the great abyss. When I am thinking about my future graduation, I am beginning to wonder what God has planned for me. At the moment, I can only see my future one step at a time- I know the next set of analyses that I need to run, the next paper I need to write, but I cannot see clearly where the Lord will lead me post graduation (if God willing that I do successfully graduate). This time, I can't easily take up another postgraduate degree, I will have to make a decision as to what I should do. Will God lead me into an academic research/ teaching career? Will he lead me into a more clinically oriented career? Will my work be in QLD, Australia, or will it be somewhere else? Or does God have something completely different in store for me? Although it's exciting to look forward to paid employment, a real job after more than 20 years of studying, it's also scary.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11

Congrats to all those who have graduated from high school, undergraduate and postgraduate degrees this year. May you continue to rely on God's word as a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path!

Christmas song #14

5-2-1--->

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

It never ceases to amaze me how we can still find new things or fresh insights from the bible. It doesn't matter how many times we have read it or how many sermons we have heard or how long the bible has existed.

Now the parable of the talents is one of those well preached messages of the bible. Some focus on the master who is God and who gives all gifts- after all, what do we have that isn't from above? Some focus on the person with the least talents, and warns us not to waste God's gifts by burying them in the ground. Others encourages us to focus on the one with the most talents to maximise the heavenly returns.

During some worship training this week, we heard the importance of those who were given 2000 talents. Ok, so the master didn't give us heaps and heaps of gifts. Perhaps we aren't entirely talented, perhaps our skills are a bit rusty, perhaps we find that we aren't as good as those around us at singing, playing musical instruments, preaching, teaching, spreading the gospel, gift giving, encouraging, etc. But we certainly know that we have some gifts. Feelings of being inapt, or discouraged may make us want to hide in the shadows and not share our gifts to further His kingdom.

Is this what God wants? Should we not use the gifts He has given us to serve Him in whatever capacity He calls us? And so humbled by this message, I stand here in wait, God if you call me, I will follow. If you tell me to do something, I will trust you even if I am unsure of my own abilities.

How will you respond? Are you willing to surrender all your pride, insecurities, mind, body, strength and soul in worship of the one who deserves it all?

Matthew 25

The Parable of the Bags of Gold
14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’
21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’
23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.
28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

不要驚動愛情 Do Not Disturb Love
唱:鄭秀文 曲:歐陽業俊 詞:高皓正
Performed by: Sammi Cheng
Lyrics by: Zac Kao

I [really] want to hold you
that’s why I avoided you
I['d] rather use distance
to [trigger] your curiosity
I avoid[ed] meeting your eyes
so I [could] catch my breath
I ordered my arms
to stay where they are
I heard the faster we fall in love
the faster it will end
That’s why I haven’t approach you
so I can love you forever
Love [can overcome so suddenly]
yet I will be patient
In hopes that when you finally wake up
the love will expand like a pair of wings
Don’t fret if you haven’t fell in love
God has taught me to wait
I’ll wait for love to flow like a stream
in order to promise you
To exchange my life for love
I want to hold you so badly
that’s why I’m praying
Before the good times come
to walk alongside with you
In this journey we call life
Through good times and bad
In sickness and in health
We’ll account for them all
Turns out [that if we approach each other slowly]
The more I’ll cherish this kiss
And the reason I’m waiting is so
I can [protect] you

To learn love through patience
I’ll send my love letters to my heart
In hopes I’ll learn to lean on God
Tamed love is more exciting
Even the world will not change
Time will wait forever
Till the day you’re willing
In order to promise you
that boundless love
I’ll use silence to awaken love
You’ll use anticipation as your response
We’ll walk until we begin to love

Relationship seminar part 1

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

After much anticipation, we had the relationship seminar part 1 yesterday. I was most grateful for the active participation of all the young adults. It is always encouraging to have an interactive and attentive audience. And Thanks be to God who revealed the message to us, I too have learned a lot from both the preparation and presentation.

BRIEF SUMMARY
- Relationship issues can perhaps be related to traffic lights, sometimes they are clearly GREEN, RED but a lot of the times they are YELLOW.
- This is how we know what Love is: Romans 5:8.1 Corinthians 13: 4-8.
- In Hebrew: Eros= sensual/sexual love (Physical attraction) Phileo = friendship/family love Agape = unconditional love. And different forms of relationships have different weightings of these components.
- Friendships. Proverbs 17:17. A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. commitment to fulfil the responsibility of a friend care for the welfare of the friend affection Brother- sister in Christ Commitment to fulfil the responsibility of a fellow-believer in Christ Care for the spiritual growth of that individual. Marriage Genesis 2:24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. (Intended for MALE AND FEMALE) Commitment to fulfil the responsibility God ordains for the husband/wife Care and concern for the spiritual, emotional, physical and mental welfare of marriage partner. Relationship-dating (Suggested by bible scholars) not to be confused with casual dating
- Sticky tape example.
- Before a relationship: 2 Corinthians 6: 14. “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers…” Guarding our hearts (Ps 119: 37; Provs 4:23-25; Prov 22:5; 1 Cor 16:13; 2 Tim 1:14)

- When the lights are yellow, slow down. Think. Pray. Ask for advice- spiritual advice is important (bible, mature brothers and sisters in christ), pray some more. The bible gives guidance, you can choose to heed or not.

WHAT I LEARNED IN THE PREPARATION
- That everyone has different styles of presenting
- Sometimes, you may have to adjust your own style in order to make it easier to work as part of a team
- Boys and girls view relationships differently
- Good problems solving requires a good conceptualisation of the problem
- But concrete answers are also important.

Christmas song #12

No gifts to present

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

I LOVE gifts. It's not the value of the gifts, it's the thought that counts for sure. I LOVE giving gifts; especially hand made gifts. Gifts help me to express the love inside of my heart.

Christmas, birthdays, just because.

I also love giving cards and letters. Hand written letters and cards are so deep and meaningful!

I attended a sermon a while ago that stuck to my heart. I have modified the story a little:

It's coming up to Christmas and a teacher had received some gifts and cards from her students. She opened each of the christmas cards up just before Christmas. The first card was a lovely Christmas card printed "world's best picture", hallmark, obviously worth the $7.99 price tag. The student hand written "Hi Miss X, From Bob". The second card was a little cheaper, worth $4.99 and was a standard christmas card with a tree on it and the student had hand written "Hi Miss X, thank you for a lovely year. All the best in the new year. From Casey". The third card was obviously a lot cheaper (probably 20 cards for $4) and the student had written "Thanks Miss X for all that you have done for me this year. You have helped me out so much and I am very grateful. Have a fantastic new year, love Billy". Then there was the last card, it was just an A4 piece of paper folded in half. Probably didn't cost the child anything. The child had drawn the teacher's face on the front cover and written a poem to her inside. The teacher put all the cards on her mantle piece. BUT which card do you think she treasured the most?

I keep all the cards that people hand write to me. I am especially touched when friends and students take the effort to write a little bit more or draw some more. This year, my first christmas card was from my class thanking me for my lessons and promising that they would read their bibles on the holidays. Each of the students signed the card. I am incredibly touched. And this card will remain in my box of keepsakes for years to come.

God, the creator of everything may not need expensive gifts from us. Although, money does help fund ministry, he wants us to offer our heart to him. To thank him for his provisions throughout the year and to put effort in our gifts we give him.

The little drummer boy. The song is about a poor boy asked by the wise men to come worship together with them. They bought expensive gifts but he had nothing to offer but his song. With no other gifts, we offer our song to you!

Christmas song #11- This is awesome!

Forever Love

02:00:00 Kikoprincess 0 Comments

Christmas time and new years maybe a time to spend time with family, friends and other loved ones. But sometimes these people let us down.

Guys/girls may tell you that they love you and they want to spend forever with you. They may then turn around and be in love with someone else.

Friends may tell you that they want to be your forever friend, but they may get their own partners and no longer have time for you. Or worse yet, you may have a big fight and your friendship may become history.

Family, though related by blood promise to love you forever. But they too maybe taken away, move away or split.

This leaves people feeling like love doesn't last. Forever becomes a cliché. It gets thrown around. BUT God loved us before we were formed. He loved us before the world began. And he created a way for us to be in love with him FOREVER. Neither life nor death, nor anything else in all creation can keep us away from HIS love.

His love endures forever.

Psalm 136

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
            His love endures forever.
2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
            His love endures forever.
3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
            His love endures forever.
4 to him who alone does great wonders,
            His love endures forever.
5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
            His love endures forever.
6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
            His love endures forever.
7 who made the great lights—
            His love endures forever.
8 the sun to govern the day,
            His love endures forever.
9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
            His love endures forever.

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
            His love endures forever.
11 and brought Israel out from among them
            His love endures forever.
12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
            His love endures forever.

13 to him who divided the Red Sea[a] asunder
            His love endures forever.
14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,
            His love endures forever.
15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
            His love endures forever.

 16 to him who led his people through the wilderness;
            His love endures forever.

17 to him who struck down great kings,
            His love endures forever.
18 and killed mighty kings—
            His love endures forever.
19 Sihon king of the Amorites
            His love endures forever.
20 and Og king of Bashan—
            His love endures forever.
21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
            His love endures forever.
22 an inheritance to his servant Israel.
            His love endures forever.

23 He remembered us in our low estate
            His love endures forever.
24 and freed us from our enemies.
            His love endures forever.
25 He gives food to every creature.
            His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
            His love endures forever.
