Q1. White lies?

In preparing for next month's relationship seminar, the young people wrote questions that they want to be answered. The first question on my list is, White lies?

When we think of white lies, we typically think of a female asking a male whether she looks fat in a particular outfit. And the males has two choices, to tell her that she looks fat ~ risking the backlash or telling her she looks beautiful in the outfit ~ and she might love him for it but get weird looks when she goes out. Are there only two choices? Is there not a third choice?

Proverbs 6:16-19

New International Version (NIV)

16 There are six things the LORD hates,
seven that are detestable to him:
    17 haughty eyes,
      a lying tongue,
      hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked schemes,
feet that are quick to rush into evil,
19 a false witness who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.

John 8:43-47

New International Version (NIV)
43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45 Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46 Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

Ephesians 4:15-16

New International Version (NIV)
15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Colossians 3:9-10

New International Version (NIV)
9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Luke 16:10

New International Version (NIV)

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

It's tempting to use white lies in relationships, but the bible is clear. DON'T DO IT. TRUST is very important in a relationship and if there is dishonesty, this is paving the way for the trust to be severely broken. But the truth can often be said with love.
